Irene Ortiz…

…approaches her dedication to music in a multidisciplinary way: as a performer, educator, and bassoon luthier.

Musical Training

Irene Ortiz was born in 1985 in the city of Córdoba. She undertook her basic and intermediate musical studies at the “Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Córdoba”. Concurrently, she trained as a bassoonist between 2000 and 2005 with maestro Javier Aragó Muñoz, a soloist with the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville. In 2001, she was chosen to study at the Orchestral Studies Academy of the Barenboim-Said Foundation, under maestro Holger Strausse, bassoonist of the Staatskapelle of Berlin.
She pursued her advanced studies at the Higher Music Center of the Basque Country “MUSIKENE”, studying with maestros David Tomàs, Edurne Santos, Vicente Alario, and Javier Aragó. She completed them with the distinction of “Matrícula de Honor” and later took a two-year Master’s in Music Pedagogy and Performance at the University of Valencia.

Irene Ortiz was a full-time member of the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (JONDE) for three consecutive years, as well as the Andalusian Youth Orchestra (OJA), from which she received a scholarship to further her studies with maestro Asger Svendsen at the “Academy of Music” in Malmö, Sweden. She was also a reserve member of the European Youth Orchestra (EUYO) in 2006, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra in 2007, and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in 2008. She was part of the Galician Symphonic Youth Orchestra and the Wiener Jeunesse Orchester, Vienna, as a solo bassoonist, touring major European auditoriums. In 2004, she was selected to join the Orchestra Academy of Granada, and in the same year was invited to the “Gustav Mahler” Music Academy in Ferrara, studying with Professor Marco Postinguel. Additionally, Irene Ortiz took advanced courses with maestros Klaus Thunemann, Marco Postinghel, Asger Svendsen, Dag Jensen, Pascal Gallois, Gustavo Núñez, David Chatterton, Ole Christian Dalt, and others.

Her luthier training for the bassoon took place at B. Moosmann (Weiblingen) and J. Püchner (Nauheim) in Germany.

Professional Activity

Her professional activity as a performer includes collaborations with prestigious symphonic groups nationally and internationally, such as the Musica Assoluta ensemble of Hannover, Germany, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen orchestra, the Cadaqués Orchestra, the Granada City Orchestra, the Córdoba Orchestra, the Valencian Community Orchestra- Les Arts, Camerata XXI, the Andalusian Chamber Orchestra, among others. After the latest auditions in April 2018, she frequently collaborates with the “Spanish Radio and Television Orchestra”. Currently, she also collaborates on projects with the Madrid Community Orchestra ORCAM.

She was a regular and competition-winning collaborator with the Royal Symphony Orchestra of Seville (2007-2008), the Symphonic Orchestra of Vallès (2010-2013), and the Liceu Theatre Orchestra of Barcelona (since 2011).

She has participated in numerous chamber music projects, including renowned ensembles such as “Moonwinds” and the contemporary music group “Zahir Ensemble” (Seville), among others.

She is a founding member and performer of the reed quintet “Barcelona Reed Quintet”, from 2010 to 2013, and of the pedagogical and chamber project “Ars Fagotto”, with which she currently develops numerous projects.

From 2009 to 2012, she taught bassoon and orchestral repertoire at the “Higher Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands” in Palma de Mallorca. She recently taught at the OJA (Andalusian Youth Orchestra). She continues to teach bassoon privately.

Other Collaborations

In the summer of 2009, she participated in various chamber music concerts within the framework of the International Festival “Instrumenta 2009” in Oaxaca, Mexico. In November 2009, she was invited to play in various chamber recitals and symphonic concerts as a solo bassoonist at the “Spain-Venezuela 2009” Festival in Caracas, collaborating with the Teresa Carreño Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, directed by maestro Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.
